Camille has been a great supporter and example for my daughters. We had the privilege of meeting her over 3 years ago at the Breakthrough organization. In that time, she has been a guiding light for both (girls). From track, to cheer, to flag football and triathlon training. Camille ensured the kids were learning sportsmanship, team work and perseverance. Through sports, she has worked extremely hard to provide opportunities for our kids which they would normally not had the chance to experience. One of my fondest memories of Camille was watching her cheer on the kids during the Chicago Triathlon. Seeing her running back and forth to make sure the kids saw her was unbelievable. She was still guiding and supporting from the sidelines. She was so proud giving then their medals. It was incredibly humbling. It really showed me how much she cared. Her investment in the kids is truly amazing. When my daughter was training for the triathlon, she was also learning how to ride a bike. Camille, with her unique coaching helped her get over her fear. She took her time over a whole summer to get her ready to roll. We will never forget how happy (she) was showing us her biking skills. We are extremely appreciative for all the great times that are girls have been exposed to with Camille. Even more grateful for all that she has invested in our girls.

I am honored to nominate Camille for Coach of the Year. She is a true leader who leads by example, setting a high standard not only through her skill and dedication, but also through her compassion and unwavering support for every athlete she coaches. Camille consistently goes above and beyond often making personal sacrifices to ensure athletes succeed and grow both on and off the field. Her ability to connect with athletes, while guiding them with both strength and empathy is unmatched. I have always known that my kid was in the best possible hands with Camille. Her presence brings confidence, growth, and inspiration to everyone around her. I couldn’t think of a more deserving coach. Camille has not only coached my athlete but walked along side her as she completed races, encouraged her in her ability to Mc/host sporting events by showing up and cheering her on. Ms. Powell has even picked up and dropped off my daughter for several trainings, and events. She has spent a great deal pouring into my child even off the field by being a listening ear and showing up to my kids other activities. Coach is an under statement. Camille is a coach and so much more.

Camille is truly a godsend. Her unwavering presence and dedication to the youth in our community has made a lasting impact, especially on my daughter. Whether it was taking the kids to the park, trick-or-treating, boxing, dining out, or simply going for a run, Camille always found meaningful ways to keep them engaged, safe, and off the streets. She has been more than just a helping hand — Camille is a trusted mentor and role model. She has a remarkable ability to connect with young people, guiding them with wisdom and compassion. (My daughter) deeply values Camille’s perspective, especially because she helps her understand things from a parent’s point of view — not by “parenting” her, but by simply being real, honest, and caring. What sets Camille apart is her thoughtfulness. She consistently reaches out with information, resources, and opportunities that could help you or someone you know. She leads with her heart and always looks out for others, making her a true pillar of support and strength in our lives. We are so grateful for Camille and the positive light she brings to everyone around her.

Ms. Camille has been an amazing Coach, Friend and supporter of our community! Not only does she coach our students, she even shows up to their school events to support them beyond their athletic programs! She is an amazing person to know. She has supported my daughters with a plethora of free programming and resources that has helped my 12 year old lose 30lbs! I cannot express how much she has changed our lives! I cannot think of anyone else more deserving than her!!!

Camille is the best coach! She is inclusive, encouraging, and an effectively communicates to both youth and parents. She is positive and that positivity has been infectious and evident amongst the team! Most importantly, she creates a safe place for youth to come together to learn and grow not only a sport but life skills and have a place of belonging. She has been consistent in contributing to his success and our family is very proud to call her a great coach!

My family first met Ms. Camille though a Youth Bike Club program in April of 2023. Since that time, she has become more than a Community Outreach Coordinator, she has become family. Ms. Camille has attended school assemblies, graduations and various events to support the students. She is one of the most genuine people we have ever met. We are so blessed to have her in our life! Thank you for all that you do, Auntie Camille!!

Camille introduced me to my first 5K about 3 years ago. She encouraged me that I could do it even if I walked it, her little push helps me. I can't put in words how much of a mentor and coach she has been to my daughter. Her passion to help people see and become better is inspiring, heartwarming. In my eyes No other deserves this honor like she does.

For me, Camille has been a major part of my child realizing she can do so much and to give it a try even if you think you don't like it. And always showing up to her activities outside of her job responsibility will always hold a special place for me Camille has become part of our village.

I am honored to nominate Camille for the Coach of the Year award, recognizing her exemplary dedication to creating a positive, inclusive, and empowering environment for her athletes. Camille embodies the essence of a youth sport coach who goes above and beyond in fostering not only athletic skills but also personal growth and well-being.

For three pivotal years, Camille Joy Powell wasn't just an after-school coordinator; she was a steadfast guide for my children. It's truly remarkable how she managed to weave together their varied interests, helping them thrive through programs like basketball, soccer, and Taekwondo. What Camille did wasn't just about signing them up for activities; it was about truly seeing (my kids), understanding their individual needs, and then seamlessly connecting them with opportunities that fostered their growth. She had a way of coordinating everything, making sure they got to practices on time, had the right gear, and most importantly, felt supported every step of the way. Her dedication created a space where my kids could explore, learn, and truly break through their own limits. My kids and I have gotten to experience and play various sports and have been able to participate in many programs thanks to Camille. She is truly wonderful and everything she does is greatly appreciated.

Camille’s journey as a newly certified run coach has been nothing short of inspiring. In 2022, she joined Breakthrough's Sports & Fitness Academy with a commitment to working with youth in out-of-school programs, merging her passion for fitness with her dedication to community and personal development. Her involvement in the community has transformed the lives of many young athletes, including my teenage son, whom she has trained and encouraged. Camille’s natural ability to motivate and uplift her youth athletes stands out as she empowers them to embrace new challenges and strive for greatness.

During her participation in the Chicago Marathon, Camille not only conquered the 26.2 miles herself but also celebrated alongside a Westside teenager running it for the first time at the age of 16. This speaks volumes about her commitment to fostering youth participation and involvement in sports. She has nurtured relationships and prioritized the community, showcasing her dedication to building a support system for her athletes.

Beyond her coaching, Camille has actively collaborated with local schools, advocating for student voice and leadership within policies and programs. Her ability to demand and support youth participation has created a culture where young athletes feel valued and heard. With her involvement in events like the Bank of America Chicago Half Marathon and other local races, she continues to inspire and lead young runners in their goals.

Camille's role as a coach is more than just teaching running; she provides the wraparound support that every young athlete needs to succeed. Her commitment extends beyond the finish line, ensuring that her athletes are equipped with the confidence and resilience to pursue their dreams. The energy, laughter, and camaraderie she shares with her running buddies create an environment filled with fun, learning, and growth.

In addition, Camille is part of Peace Runners 773, a team based in Garfield Park, where she fosters intergenerational support for runners and walks, bridging the gap in health equity for the Westside of Chicago. Her passion for closing this gap highlights her dedication to the well-being of the community and her athletes.

Camille’s ability to connect with youth, prioritize their needs, and demand their success is a testament to her greatness as a coach. I wholeheartedly recommend Camille for the Coach of the Year award, as she exemplifies the qualities of a coach who empowers, inspires, and creates lasting change in the lives of her athletes. With her guidance, my son has grown not only as a runner but also as a confident and motivated young individual, ready to take on new challenges.

I met Camille three ago and she has become family. She's been more reliable and supportive than blood relatives. She always goes above and beyond for my boys and all the kids. She train them on her day off for races, triathlon, boxing and work after hours providing transportation for those who needed rides to events. She has been a great example and positive force to always push through whatever you wish to accomplish.

Coach Camille has had an incredibly positive impact on not only me but also my kids. From the start, she has brought a mix of knowledge, encouragement, and genuine care that has helped all of us grow—physically, mentally, and emotionally. For (my kids), she has made running fun and meaningful, helping them build confidence, discipline, and a sense of accomplishment. They look up to her not just as a coach, but as a role model who motivates them to work hard while also reminding them to enjoy the journey. I’m truly grateful for the impact she’s had on our family.

Camille Joy Powell is the heart and soul of our program. Her patience, dedication, and genuine love for the kids set her apart as an exceptional coach and mentor. Camille never seems to tire—she’s always ready to run, practice, and encourage the team, often adjusting her own schedule to meet the kids at their convenience.

She goes above and beyond her coaching duties, volunteering to drive or ride with the kids to events and ensuring everyone feels supported and included. Camille’s ability to connect with each child, recognize their strengths, and build their confidence makes a lasting impact both on and off the field.

Whether it’s offering helpful tips during practice, cheering from the sidelines, or celebrating personal growth, Camille leads by example and brings out the best in everyone around her.

I’ve had the privilege of working with Camille on multiple occasions—leading community boot camps, running youth sports performance camps, and giving back through events like our Thanksgiving boot camp. What always stood out was how unselfish she was—not just showing up, but truly being present. Camille wasn’t there to be the face or get credit; she was the Swiss army knife—doing whatever was needed, whenever it was needed. From running the front desk to setting up operations, playing music, coaching, or keeping everything organized, she filled every gap without hesitation. In community work, you learn quickly that the work isn’t about one person—it’s about the people you serve. And Camille embodies that. Her consistent commitment to the youth and to the mission is exactly the type of energy that makes this work worth doing. Being around people like her reminds me why I do this.

Camille’s leadership on Chicago’s West Side reflects what true coaching represents: empowering others to grow, to push past limits, and to see themselves as capable of greatness. She is not just coaching athletes—she’s shaping future leaders, one stride at a time.

Coach Camille creates a positive, inclusive environment where every young person—no matter their background, ability, or experience—feels seen and supported. She emphasizes character as much as competition, using every practice and event as an opportunity to build confidence, discipline, and teamwork.

Her dedication extends well beyond the track. Camille mentors her athletes academically, emotionally, and socially, ensuring they develop into well-rounded young leaders. She celebrates their victories and walks beside them through challenges, consistently modeling patience, integrity, and compassion.

Her impact extends beyond the track. Camille plays a vital role in community events—organizing, greeting, and creating spaces that bring people together. She is a bridge between generations and a role model for what it means to serve with consistency and love.

One of her most inspiring accomplishments has been helping youth train for and complete marathons—something achieved by less than one percent of people worldwide. Through structure, encouragement, and accountability, she has shown young runners that perseverance can take them further than they ever imagined.

Camille consistently shows up early, stays late, and goes the extra mile for her athletes. She takes the time to teach, to listen, and to lead by example. Whether guiding first-time runners, mentoring high-school athletes, or helping young people believe in what’s possible, Camille approaches every moment with heart and excellence.

Over the past two years, I’ve witnessed Camille’s unmatched dedication to youth development, community wellness, and leadership through her work with organizations like Breakthrough and PeaceRunners773. There’s not enough words to explain why Camille is the right candidate for this award! Coach is just a title, yet Camille does work of what family would do. I can think of no one else besides Camille whenever thinking about Coach of the year! She’s perfect for it.

Camille is a dedicated and passionate individual, committed to making a difference in the lives of the youth she works with and using fitness and sports to do so.

This year, Camille has trained student athletes to complete the Bank of America 13.1 and the Chicago Marathon. She has worked tirelessly to advocate for these students to have access to the gear and attire they need to complete their training and feel celebrated on race day. She has also trained alongside these students — sharing coaching strategies midrun, offering encouragement, and ensuring each of her youth runners was equipped for and through their race days.

Camille truly deserves to win Coach of the Year for her incredible dedication and leadership. She went above and beyond by training all the youth for both the 13.1 and the full marathon, inspiring them to push past their limits and believe in themselves. Her commitment, encouragement, and passion for helping young runners achieve their goals make her not just a great coach, but a role model for everyone. Camille’s impact reaches far beyond the finish line she’s building confidence, discipline, and a love for running in the next generation.

Camille single handedly trained numerous youth for a half marathon and marathon this year. She met with them to run, kept them accountable and ran with them. Most notably, she ran the entire Chicago Marathon with one of them who struggled through the race. She made sure he finished safely and with support the whole way. Camille often puts youth before herself-voluntarily-and believes strongly in their development and keeping them a priority at all times.

Camille has time after time shown her dedication to not only youth athletics, but youth development as well. Camille readily makes herself available not just to teach youth new running/stretching techniques, but places herself in positions to consistently and intentionally support youth in their athletic endeavors; whether it’s attending sporting events, helping students with their stretching, giving youth more recovery techniques, the one thing that’s proven time and time again is that Camille is present! The impact she’s left on her youth is more than long lasting.

Camille has embraced her own personal running journey and has overcome many barriers. Through those challenges, she has taken those lessons and become an incredible coach for youth, helping them to first identify their barriers and then find ways to overcome them.

Camille is absolutely amazing! She took multiple youth and trained with then got the 13.1 race through their community on Chicago’s westside and well as 1 youth and personally trained with him for his first Chicago Marathon! She’s stayed with this youth for the entirety of the race and ensured he finished! Camille is fully committed to our youth and is very deserving of this award!!

As a recent arrival to Chicago seeking out a place-based organization that endeavors to carry out the good work, finding Breakthrough has truly been a joy. Although our time did not overlap for long, it was evident that Camille was instrumental in facilitating that good work that is rooted in place. Changing outcomes for the better requires consistency and steadfast commitment, and I believe Camille was instrumental in providing that consistency and continual commitment to the organization and the students it serves. I'm grateful for the opportunity to step into the good work at Breakthrough, and am thankful for Camille and the work she has done that ensured that foundation was laid long before I arrived.
